Lesson Plans
Lesson Plans
Perhaps it is a bit counterintuitive, but the lessons at the bottom of this page are the more recent ones. The first lessons I have listed are ones I created as part of my practicum. Further on down are a few additions from my student teaching this spring.
Below are links to each of the 4 lesson plans I created in Social Studies Methods along with the practicum
Historical Inquiry
A lesson on the decline of the Indus Valley Civilization. This was the first lesson I taught, and the document also includes my reflection on that experience.
A lesson on the concept of a republic. I also taught this one in the fall of 2007, and it includes my reflection.
Structured Academic Controversy
Should we honor Christopher Columbus with his own holiday? This lesson gets students to confront the arguments for and against honoring Columbus.
This lesson is a discussion of Neil Young's song "Cortez the Killer." After reading about Cortes and the Aztecs, students tackle Young's portrayal of history.
I created the following lessons for my Content Area Reading and Writing class in the fall of 2007. Hopefully I will have a chance to use these in my student teaching in the spring. These lessons use various strategies to guide students through reading activities based on different types of texts, including their textbook, primary sources, and newspaper articles.
The Vikings and Vinland
These 4 lessons are all designed to be part of a thematic unit on Europe in the ages of reason and revolution:
Spring Student Teaching
The following lessons/units are ones that I designed and taught during my student teaching in AP Human Geography, Honors World History, and Average World History
Byzantine Culture - This is a lesson that I video taped as part of my spring practicum so that I could see myself in actions and address my weaknesses. The video is not online because of the need for my students' privacy and the fact that the file would be unreasonably huge.
Industry and Economic Development - This is a unit plan for an AP Human Geography unit on Industry and Economic development. The unit plan is a bit bare-bones, as there are more detailed lesson plans depending on the day. Below is an example of a lesson plan within this unit.
Outsourcing Debate - This is a debate on the issue of offshore outsourcing. It is one of the lessons for the AP Human Geography unit on Economic Development and Industry.
Inca Civilization - This is a lesson on the Inca Civilization for Average World History 1. It uses interpretation of images to understand various aspects of the Inca.
World War I Simulation: This is a game that simulates the conditions in Europe surrounding World War I. In the game, students represent 1 of 6 European countries as they make decisions on war and peace. The lesson highlights the security dilemma and the effect of militarism and alliances on the decisions to go to war.
